Politics
Kennedy Agyapong is one of the few
remaining politicians in Ghana who has never been defeated in an election. The
success of Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo in the elections of 2016 was due, in
large part, to his work ethic and industry. Additionally, he was a significant
factor in the victories of numerous New Patriotic Party parliamentary
candidates, including K.T. Hammond and many others.
On the other hand, Kennedy Agyapong
chairs the Defence and Interior Committee in Parliament, under the current
presidency of Nana Akufo-Addo.
Mr. Agyapong has said that he would
take his own life if the brother of former President John Mahama, Ibrahim
Mahama, is not imprisoned by the administration of Akufo-Addo for various
corrupt acts. These actions, according to Agyapong, have resulted in the loss
of money for the state. One example that he provided was that Ibrahim Mahama
did not pay his taxes for more than a year at the time that his brother John
Dramani Mahama was serving as President of the Republic of Ghana.
The
statements and pronouncements of Kennedy Agyapong via the media, led
to an inquiry of Ibrahim Mahama, which ultimately resulted in Ibrahim Mahama
agreeing to pay the aforementioned taxes. Kennedy Agyapong earned praise from a
diverse cross-section of Ghanaians as a result of this action.
Mr.
Agyapong's indirect attack on the Electoral Commissioner of Ghana, Charlotte
Osei, for the alleged statements that, she traded sex for her position as the
Electoral Commissioner (EC) boss brought upon him criticisms from various
leaders including Queen mothers and human rights activists as well as other
members of parliament.
In
2018, after the dismissal of GFA president, Kwasi
Nyantakyi, Kennedy Agyapong said that, anti-corruption investigative
journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas should be stopped before he starts investigating
people in their "bedrooms while they are asleep."
He has repeatedly threatened Anas
and was condemned internationally by the Committee to Protect Journalists and
Reporters.
And without
hindrance, he stated that Anas’s methods were ‘unfair’. Speaking live on Adom FM on
4 June 2018, he called Anas “a blackmailer, an extortionist”, mimed his throat
being cut and said he should be “hanged.” He also called for “retribution”
against Anas’ fellow reporter, Ahmed Hussein-Suale, saying “If he comes here,
beat him… Whatever happens, I’ll pay.” Hussein-Suale was subsequently
assassinated.
Cars and Private Jet
It is thought that Honorable
Kennedy Agyapong is the first person in Ghana to buy an $8 million Rolls Royce.
It is also believed that he has a private jet, which has sparked requests for a
probe into his fortune by the Customs Excise and Preventive Service.
