Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo has expressed pride
in the nation’s advancements in sports infrastructure, highlighting their
contribution to hosting international events.
Delivering his final State of the Nation Address to
Parliament on Friday, January 3, 2025, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the
construction of numerous AstroTurf pitches nationwide and the refurbishment of
existing sports facilities.
He attributed these developments to Ghana’s ability to
successfully host the 13th African Games in Accra, despite challenges.
The development of around 150 AstroTurf pitches across
the country and the renovation of older stadiums have elevated Ghana’s
reputation as a destination for international sports.
This progress enabled us to host, against all odds,
the 2023 13th African Games,” he stated.
For the first time, Ghana welcomed over 13,000
athletes and officials from across Africa between March 8 and 23, 2024.
The games, held across ten venues, saw Ghana win an
impressive 69 medals.
Approximately $195 million was invested in
infrastructure for the event, including the newly built Borteyman Sports
Complex and the completed University of Ghana Stadium in Legon.
