I’ll use AI to fight galamsey if elected president – Mahama. |
National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has promised that if he wins the next general elections on
December 7, he will use artificial intelligence to aid in the battle against
illegal mining operations.
During the 3rd Annual Transformational Dialogue on
Small-scale Mining at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in
Sunyani, the NDC flagbearer was invited as the guest of honour. And there, he
announced that his government would use artificial intelligence (AI) to track
excavators, locate all small-scale mining and galamsey operations, and geofence
all concessions. The goal of this initiative is to reduce environmental
destruction by coordinating and monitoring activities within the small-scale
mining sector.
In addition, he said, a specific fund would be
established to support the establishment of a mining equipment pool for mining
towns that practise sustainable exploitation.
“A special
revolving fund will be established with the private sector to provide capital
and a mining equipment pool in each district where gold mining is prevalent.
This will facilitate easy and affordable access to relevant mining equipment.”
According to the former president, his administration
would fulfil its promise by establishing the Ghana Mining Excellence Centre
(GMEC). He said that UENR and UMaT [University of Mines and Technology] will
work together to manage this centre.
“To support all these brilliant initiatives and ensure
that we are implementing them as best as possible, I have announced the launch
of a Ghana Mining Excellence Centre (GMEC), to be run initially for five years
and which will be coordinated by UENR and UMaT.
“As I have envisioned it, the Centre will collaborate
with scientists from other universities worldwide to implement joint research
and innovation projects that will simulate green growth within the Ghanaian
mining and minerals industry.”
