About Egerton University

Kenya's Egerton University is a higher learning public institution of repute. It is the country of Kenya's oldest higher education institution.  A little village around 25 kilometres (16 miles) southwest of the town of Nakuru, Njoro is home to the university's main campus.  This is around 182 kilometres (113 miles) by car northwest of Nairobi, Kenya's capital and biggest city.

The institution was established in 1939 and was once known as Egerton Farm School. Maurice Egerton, the fourth Baron Egerton of Tatton, donated a large tract of land, totaling 740 acres (3 km2), to build it. The school was founded with the intention of preparing white adolescents from Europe for professions in agriculture. Egerton Agricultural College was the new name by 1955. A two-year diploma programme and a one-year certificate programme in agriculture were available. Another 1,100 acres (4.5 km2) of land were given by Lord Egerton in 1958. Soon after, the institution welcomed students of all races from Kenya and other African nations.

The institution continued to grow and joined the University of Nairobi system in 1979 with assistance from the Kenyan government and USAID. The institution was accredited as a public university in 1987.
