Accra Technical University is situated in Accra's Central
Business District thanks to its excellent location and it is the sole technical
university in the "inner city,". The school is fortunate to share boundaries
with other distinguished organisations like Movenpick and Accra City Hotel
(formerly Novotel), while the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the City Campus of
the University of Ghana are located in our northern zone. And while the Central
Police Command, the Ghana Cocoa Board, and two telcos (AirtelTigo and MTN)
border us to the west, the Ghana Assembly Press protects the institution from
the south.
The university is just a 4 km drive from the Kotoka
International Airport, which provides us the benefit of welcoming international
students and guests hours before their arrival. Its excellent position offers
amazing access for moving tourists and students around the country.
History: Accra Technical University
(ATU)
Accra Technical University,
which was formerly known as Accra Technical Institute, was the first Technical
University to be established after it was founded in 1949 as a Technical School
and commissioned as such in 1957. In 1963 the Institute assumed a new name as
Accra Polytechnic under the directions of President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah to be a
key driver of the country’s industrialization process. Tertiary status was
awarded to the Polytechnic when the PNDC Law of 1992 (PNDC 321) was made
effective in 1993/1994.
In accordance with the terms
of the elevation, the University, which falls under the purview of the Higher
Education Council, was granted the authority to independently confer the Higher
National Diploma (HND) through the National Board for Professional and
Technical Examination (NABPTEX).
The PNDC Law 321 of 1992 was
repealed when the Polytechnic Act (Act 745) went into effect in 2007. This gave
polytechnics the autonomy to award Higher National Diplomas (HND), Diplomas,
Certificates, and other degrees that the Polytechnic may deem appropriate.
These degrees are all accredited by the National Accreditation Board.
The Technical University Act,
2016, (Act 922) transformed Accra Polytechnic into Accra Technical University
and granted it the status of a Technical University. This change occurred
simultaneously with the transformation of 8 other polytechnics. The promotion
was intended to improve technical education with the goal of creating graduates
of world-class calibre who are shaped in excellence and professionalism via
participation in a variety of technical programmes, both in theory and in
practise.
At the moment, the university is comprised of a total of 5 faculties and 16 departments. These faculties are as follows: the Faculty of Engineering; the Faculty of Built Environment; the Faculty of Applied Sciences; the Faculty of Applied Arts; and the Faculty of Business.
