Vodafone Ghana, previously known as Ghana Telecom, is one of the country's primary provider of telecommunications services. The Ghanaian firm is a subsidiary of Vodafone Group Plc: A leading mobile telecommunications provider in Africa.

It has over 7.3 million mobile voice users as of June 2022, which accounted for 17.87% of the market share in Ghana.

Vodafone Ghana appointed Patricia Obo-Nai to assume the position of Chief Executive Officer, making her the first Ghanaian woman to hold this position.

In January of 2021, they received confirmation from the Top Employers Institute that they had maintained their status as a Top Employer in Africa for the third year in a row.

Vodafone & Ghana Telecom Deal

On July 3, 2008, it was revealed that Vodafone had reached an agreement with the government of Ghana to purchase 70 percent of Ghana Telecom for a price of 900 million United States dollars, with the overall enterprise value being around 1.3 billion United States dollars.

Following the completion of the sale, Vodafone had a 70% ownership in the firm, while the government of Ghana maintained a 30% investment in the business. On August 17, 2008, the transaction to acquire the property was finalised.

The president of Ghana, John Agyekum Kufuor, was in favour of the sale, but the opposition party, which would go on to win the presidential elections a few months later, was vehemently against it. After being elected president, John Atta Mills, who is also the leader of the National Democratic Congress party (NDC), immediately began an inquiry into the contract, asserting that the government "did not get value for money."

In spite of these assertions, Vodafone a few months later, would write down the value of its investment in Ghana Telecom by £250 million as a result of the worsening economic conditions, which damaged the business's prospects.

On April 15, 2009, Ghana Telecom and its mobile subsidiary OneTouch renamed themselves as Vodafone Ghana. This change took effect immediately.

With a market share for April 2016 of 21.92% for voice and 25.32% for data, Vodafone Ghana further strengthened its status as the country's second biggest operator in 2016, behind African communications behemoth MTN Ghana.

In December 2019, Vodafone Ghana made the announcement that it had purchased 100% of the share in Vodacom Business Ghana that was held by the Vodacom Group.

Philanthropy

At the 2017 People's Choice Practitioners Honours, Media Men Ghana awarded the Vodafone Ghana as the outstanding Philanthropic and Health Support Institution.

The Vodafone Scholar Project was founded by the firm in partnership with the British Council. Its purpose is to grant full and partial scholarships to female high school and college students pursuing STEM topics who do not have the financial resources to complete their education.

A partnership between Vodafone and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) was established in 2016. As part of the arrangement, the business committed to provide improved high-speed internet and Wi-Fi access to all of the faculties located on the several campuses of the University in Ghana.
