Although monkeypox is not as deadly as Covid-19, a
public health expert at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, Dr Banda
Khalifa, has said that Ghana's health officials must increase monitoring
procedures to prevent an epidemic in other nations.
Monkeypox is an uncommon illness caused by a
monkeypox viral infection.
Following the spread in other areas of the globe,
Dr Khalifa told TV3's News 360 on May 21 that prevention must be Ghana's
priority.
“Prevention is what we have to look out for,” he
said, and further indicated that “not to sound the alarm but Monkeypox is not
as severe as Covid 19.
“For now, all we have to do is for public health
system to strengthen our surveillance mechanism.”
The BBC reports that more than 80 cases of
monkeypox have been confirmed in at least 12 countries.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced
the investigation of additional 50 suspected cases, without identifying any
nations, and has warned that more cases are expected to be reported.
Nine European nations, as well as the United
States, Canada, and Australia, have verified infections.
