Chasing Vanity: A Call to Prioritize What Truly Matters.

Chasing Vanity: A Call to Prioritize What Truly Matters.
Rev. Fr. Kelvin Ugwu, Roman Catholic Priest.

In my ten years as a missionary priest, I have buried so many people. I have buried the poor, I have buried the rich.

I have buried the very old, I have buried a newly born. I have buried the strong, I have buried the weak. I have been in a burial of an archbishop, and I have been in a burial of a pagan.

I have buried someone close to me, my biological father. . . I have buried someone I never met or knew. In all these, I can tell you this. . . There is nothing in this world. I say it again, there is nothing in this world that is worth some of our fighting, greed, jealousy and malice.

Ecclesiastes 1:2,2:21-23 captures it better:

"Vanity of vanities, Qoheleth says. Vanity of vanities. All is vanity!
For so it is that a man who has laboured wisely, skilfully and successfully must leave what is his own to someone who has not toiled for it at all.

This, too, is vanity and great injustice; for what does he gain for all the toil and strain that he has undergone under the sun? What of all his laborious days, his cares of office, his restless nights? This, too, is vanity."

So as you toil and labour every single day, do it without malice or jealousy or greed. As you search for fame and power and money, be reminded that many powerful men have gone and their power did not stop the world, many rich men have gone and their wealth did not buy the world, many famous men have died and the world did not stop, nor did their fame save them.

Do all you can, chase whatever you can, but be reminded that you are chasing vanity. Only one thing is important, your soul.
