The financial industry in Ghana is composed of various entities, including the central bank, commercial banks, development banks, merchant banks, and rural unit banks. The responsibility of implementing all monetary policies in the country lies with the Bank of Ghana, which serves as the central bank.

The banking industry in Ghana has exhibited consistent expansion and presently comprises of 28 privately owned banks. A list of some of the top banks in Ghana are highlighted below, and they are as follows:

EcoBank

EcoBank is a subsidiary of the Ecobank Group, a pan-African banking conglomerate that operates in 33 African countries and one of the largest banks in Ghana. Ecobank holds the largest market share (deposits) in Ghana, with a score of 12.4% for 2022. Ecobank offers a diverse array of financial services, encompassing personal and commercial banking, investment banking, and insurance. The bank has an extensive branch network, with a total of 65 branches located throughout Ghana. This is the second largest branch network in the country, following GCB.

GCB

GCB, previously referred to as Ghana Commercial Bank, is a government-owned financial establishment that offers banking services to individuals, enterprises, and the government. The financial institution holds the second highest market share in Ghana, with a percentage of 11.5%. It maintains an extensive network of branches and ATMs, boasting a total of 214 branches throughout Ghana. Over the years it has gained reputation, as one of the oldest public and conservative banks in Ghana.

Standard Chartered Bank

Standard Chartered Bank is a British multinational bank which has presence in more than 60 countries worldwide.  Standard Chartered Bank offers a diverse array of financial services, encompassing personal and commercial banking, investment banking, and wealth management. Standard Chartered Bank Ghana PLC maintains a network comprising of 27 branches and 56 ATMs located in key towns and cities across Ghana. The establishment of the company dates back to 1896, thereby positioning it as the oldest commercial bank in Ghana.

Absa

Absa is a financial institution that operates in Ghana as a subsidiary of Absa Group Limited. The latter is a pan-African banking conglomerate with a presence in 12 African countries. It was previously known as Barclays Bank Ghana. Absa offers a comprehensive suite of financial services, encompassing personal and commercial banking, investment banking, and wealth management. The financial institution possesses a total of 56 branches situated throughout the country of Ghana and is one of the oldest private banks in Ghana to have been established in the country.

Fidelity Bank

Fidelity Bank offers a comprehensive suite of banking solutions to individuals, as well as small, medium, and large businesses.  The financial institution boasts a robust presence in the retail banking sector and is dedicated to enhancing its digital banking solutions. According to market research, Fidelity Bank currently holds a market share of 6.3% in Ghana.

Zenith Bank

Zenith Bank is a financial institution that operates in multiple African countries and is a subsidiary of Zenith Bank Plc, a Nigerian multinational corporation. Zenith Bank holds a market share of 5.6% in Ghana and operates a network of 39 branches throughout the country. Zenith Bank offers a diverse array of financial services encompassing personal and corporate banking, investment banking, and insurance. Zenith Bank is one of the outstanding and fastest growing banks in Ghana. It was recently named the outstanding bank of the year at the Ghana West Africa Business Excellence Awards.
