About University of Cape Coast (UCC)
The University of Cape Coast is a public, coeducational
university that may be found in the centre of Cape Coast in the Central Region
of Ghana. The school is located on a hill with stunning views of the expansive
Atlantic Ocean, and it even has its own private seashore. The Southern Campus
(Old Site) and the Northern Campus are the two locations where its operations
are carried out (New Site). Elmina and Cape Coast Castle, two of the most
significant historical landmarks in Ghana, are located just a few kilometres
away from the campus of this institution.
In October 1962, in response to the country's critical need
for highly trained and competent workers in the field of education, the
University of Cape Coast was founded. Its original mandate was to
prepare graduate instructors for second cycle schools, teacher training
colleges, and technical institutions. This was a mission that the two existing
public universities at the time were unable to fulfil since they lacked the
necessary resources.
An Act of Parliament granted the college the right to issue its own degrees, diplomas, and certificates on October 1, 1971, thus, granting it the status of a complete and autonomous university. This gave the institution the ability to bestow degrees onto its own students. The university is now in a position to address the human resource demands of the country's other ministries and sectors, aside the Ministry of Education. Since its founding, this educational institution has expanded its mission to include the education of those who want to pursue careers as agriculturalists, business professionals, administrators, and legal professionals. UCC has produced individuals who have gone on to hold positions such as Ministers of State, High Commissioners, CEOs, and Members of Parliament.
History: University of Cape Coast (UCC)
The University of Cape Coast was formed in October 1962 as a
university institution and given a special partnership with the University of
Ghana, Legon. And with the ability to award its own degrees, diplomas, and
certificates according to a parliamentary act, the institution officially
became a full-fledged university on October 1, 1971. The urgent demand for
highly trained and competent labour in the education sector led to the
establishment of the university. In order to address the workforce requirements
of the country's accelerated education programme at the time, its initial goal
was to train graduate professional teachers for Ghana's second cycle
institutions and the Ministry of Education. The university is now able to
address the workforce requirements of other ministries and sectors in the
nation, in addition to the Ministry of Education, thanks to the development of
some of its faculties/schools and the diversification of its programmes. The
University of Cape Coast today has around 80,000 students enrolled overall, up
from 155 when it first opened its doors in 1963.
There were just two academic departments at the institution in
the beginning: Arts and Science. These departments were formed
into faculties in 1963. The university established the faculties of
education and economics & social studies, which is currently known as the
faculty of social sciences, in 1964 in order to further its efforts to meet the
goals specified. The year 1975 saw the establishment of the fifth faculty,
the School of Agriculture. In order to create the Schools of Physical and
Biological Sciences, the faculty of science was divided during the 2002–2003
academic year. Beginning with the 2003–2004 academic year, the Department of
Business Studies was also raised to the status of a School of Business. Many
new schools have been added, including the medical school, law faculty, and
economics school. The university today educates physicians, nurses,
administrators, agriculturalists, accountants, attorneys, and other professions
in addition to those involved in planning and implementing educational programmes.
Ministers of State, High Commissioners, CEOs, and Members of Parliament are
among the University of Cape Coast (UCC) alumni.
Student Population
The University of Cape Coast had a total enrollment of 155
students when it first opened its doors in 1963; now, it has a total student
population of 74,720. This is how the breakdown comes out: 18,949 regular
undergraduate students, 1445 sandwich undergraduate students, 1014 regular
postgraduate students, 2773 sandwich postgraduate students 48,989 distance
undergraduate students and 1540 postgraduate distance students. For the
2016–2017 academic year, the institution gave admissions offers to a total of
24,723 students, who were then accepted into one of its many programmes.
