Govt in talks to sell Saglemi housing to private developer. |
Francis Asenso-Boakye, the Minister for Works and Housing, has
revealed that talks are now taking place for a private sector developer to
assume the management of the Saglemi housing project.
According to him, after the construction of the housing units are
complete, the developer will be responsible for selling them.
Francis Asenso-Boakye declared this at a news
conference held in Accra, on the 13th of November, 2022, monitored by
GhanaNews.hrforum.uk. He added that, the government was unable
to make any further investments in the project because of its challenges.
He said, “Government doesn't intend to expend more on the completion of the project. Government has decided to sell the project.”
“We're allowing for a private sector developer to take up the
initiative to build and sell the housing units," he stated.
The minister of housing said that an advisory council would be
established in order to guide the process and ensure transparency in the
bidding procedure.
The Saglemi housing project, which got underway in 2012 when the
NDC was in power, intended to construct 5,000 dwelling units in total.
Allegations of inappropriate utilisation of funds, halted the
successful completion of the project.
The Minister of Housing said that the 1,500 apartments that were
constructed under the NDC were inhabitable, and that it would take around $46
million to supply water, electricity, and storm drains to the new homes.
