Paul Adom-Otchere, host of Good Evening Ghana, has filed a lawsuit against Blessed Godsbrain Smart, aka Captain Smart, and Media General Ghana Limited.

According to an article posted on Citinewsroom.com, Captain Smart made slanderous remarks against Paul and suggested the journalist had taken bribes.

Adom-Otchere is seeking GH10 million in damages in a writ, among other things and also “compensatory damages for the damage done to his reputation and aggravated damages for the reckless and malicious publication of the defamatory words.”

He is also seeking an order from the court directing the defendants to retract and apologise for the comments “on all media platforms operated by the 2nd defendant” as well as an “injunction restraining the defendants from further publishing and causing to be published the said similar words defamatory of the plaintiff.”

Background

Captain Smart chastised Paul Adom-Otchere in an edition of 'Onua Maakye' for an editorial the latter wrote in response to comments Kwasi Kyei Darkwah (KKD) made that aimed to incriminate finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

On GTV's Breakfast Show, KKD, a well-known media and tourist expert, said that the finance minister and the government were enriching themselves at the cost of the Ghanaian people.

In his rage, KKD said that it was unethical for some officials and their enterprises to continue profiting off Ghana's debts under the guise of financial advice.

However, Adom-Otchere defended the minister on the grounds that the consultants were chosen fairly and the corporation was thus entitled to it on the basis of merit.

Adom-Otchere remembered, among other things, how Ofori-Atta's business was chosen in that respect even though his party was the opposition.

On his morning programme on Monday, Captain Smart slammed that storyline with a 'tirade of invectives'.

Backing KKD, Captain Smart said it makes no sense to him that the finance minister’s company gets 9.6% from each loan the country takes.

“Honestly speaking, Paul Adom-Otchere is my senior but he’s unwise,” Captain Smart said as he spewed some unprintable words.

“Let me be sincere with you; you don’t think. You see that Kwame Sefa Kayi [Peace FM morning show host] is now silent? He’s observing the system because he doesn’t want to commit any blunder for Ghanaians to descend on him. You’re being a fool so stop, Paul.”

The nomination of Paul Adom-Otchere as Board Chairman of Ghana Airports Company Limited, according to Captain Smart, was political in nature and was done to turn the broadcaster into the government's poodle.
