Sudan famine: The haunting photo that killed Kevin Carter. |
During the 1993 famine in Sudan, there was a
picture going around of a vulture waiting for a starved little girl to die so
it could eat her.
Photographer Kevin Carter of South Africa captured
this "amazing" image and went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for his
work (edited and left out here due to his inhuman posture).
However, Kevin only had a few months to bask in the glory of his purported
accomplishment before he succumbed to depression and killed himself.
In fact, he was proud of his success and was being
lauded by major international news outlets for his "excellent"
photography.
One of the interviews he did (for a telephone
show) triggered his despair when a caller wanted to know what had happened to
the kid.
Kevin replied, "I didn't wait to find out
after that picture because I had a flight to catch..."
And the person replied, “I told you there were two
vultures that day; one of them had a camera.
His constant thought of this statement led to depression and his ultimate
suicide.
So, are you a vulture too?
No matter what, we must prioritise helping others above protecting our own
interests.
If Kevin Carter had picked up the kid and carried
her to the UN Feeding Center, he would be alive and he would be much more
revered today.
Always keep the greater good of mankind in mind
and act accordingly.
Exactly how we can provide a hand and dry those
tears.
Let us think about the individuals we will be
helping while we pursue education, financial success, or even political
position.
