| Why late starts, hurt women most? |
It is a scientific and biological fact that a
woman’s fertility is at its peak when she is between 16 and 30 years old.
The best age to get pregnant is still within
this period. The risk of pregnancy complications is low and the body system is
well adjusted to carry a baby by this period.
Complications like miscarriage, genetic
abnormalities (like Down syndrome), gestational diabetes, and preeclampsia are
lower when she is between 20 and early 30s compared to later ages.
By the late 30s, fertility in a woman begins to
drop. The chances of pregnancy start diminishing.
I did not make the above up. You can do your
research or consult your gynaecologist. And even more, real-life experiences
are many, they are all staring everyone in the face, but we choose to ignore
them.
Ideally, nothing stops a girl of 18 and above
from getting married. But society tells her that she can’t get married unless
she meets a certain societal requirement, which includes school and a job.
Yet, this same society frustrates her with bad
governance to the point that before she finishes school after undergoing many
hurdles like JAMB, admissions delays, university strikes, NYSC year, and
finally gets a job and starts earning, she is already in her 30s.
If there is good governance, a girl can be done
with secondary school at 17. By 21, she is done with university and service. By
23, she is already earning well and is open to starting a home.

With bad governance, she finishes school late.
Some may even travel abroad to do a master's degree they never intended to, all
because they are looking for greener pastures. By this time she is already in
her late 30s. Her fertility is already dropping.
When she is ready for marriage, the men who are
not married will be more attracted to women who are in their 20s and not her.
Those who will be attracted to her will most likely be men who are already
married or who want her as a second wife.
So, she will naturally begin praying for a
husband. When she finds one, she starts praying to be pregnant. When she
becomes pregnant, she begins praying for energy to carry the pregnancy and for
the pregnancy to stay. The chance of having a fibroid at this age is also high.
As humans, we see these things, we have
reasoning to understand them, but we often find a way to push reasoning away
and look for ways to spiritualize everything.
It is one thing if you are the one making the
choice not to marry early; it is another thing to be conditioned by society and
bad governance. Most of us are conditioned by bad governance. Almost all our
problems come from bad governance.
Now you see, everything is connected to everything. This is why we preach about good governance so you could finish school early, get a job early and have your kids at the right time according to how nature has made it. But when we talk, you think we are foolish.
