Under the name Imo State University, Etiti, the institution was founded in the old Imo State in 1981. When Sam Mbakwe was the governor of the former Imo State, he founded the university. The main campus was in Etiti, Imo State, while the law school was on a separate site in Aba. The institution relocated to its permanent location at Uturu Okigwe between 1984 and 1985 during the military administration of General Ike Nwachukwu.

Abia State University Uturu, Isuikwuato Local Government Area, Abia State, Nigeria, is the name given to the university's Uturu campus when Abia State acquired ownership of it in 1991. The institution is structured into colleges and schools since it was established using the same collegiate system as the institution of Nebraska.

It has two campuses: the main campus in Uturu and the College of Law, College of Agriculture, and College of Veterinary Medicine, which are hosted by the Umuahia campus, which is located in the Nigerian state capital of Abia.
