Ghana's 2022 World Cup campaign got off to a losing start on Thursday, as Portugal beat them 3-2 with Cristiano Ronaldo getting on the scoresheet from the spot kick.

Portugal took the lead with a goal from Ronaldo, but Ghana got an equaliser via Andre Ayew. And in the midst of the jubilation, Portugal scored again via Joao Felix to go up 2-1. Rafael Leao also scored to make it 3-1 in favour of Portugal.

Substitute Osman Bukari's close-range header gave Ghana hope, setting up a frantic, last few minutes at Stadium 974, with the score tied at 3-2.

Portugal dominated the game in a tedious opening 45, and the two chances they created, fell to Ronaldo. The first one slipped away thanks to a poor first touch and the second went begging when he headed wide, having done all the hard work in jumping high, to meet the ball.

Things were much better after the break and Portugal went into the lead from the penalty spot after Mohammed Salisu fouled Cristiano Ronaldo in the 18-yard box. Ronaldo slammed home from the spot, but Ghana, inspired by Mohammed Kudus, soon equalised through Ayew.

Otto Addo, opted to take off both his attackers (Kudus and Ayew) and within seconds, Portugal was 2-1 in front courtesy a Jao Felix finish. Rafael Leao who came on as a substitute later in the game, latched onto a Bruno Fernandes assist, to score Portugal’s third and final goal.

Then, just when it seemed all hope was lost for Ghana, Osman Bukari scored a livener, but despite nine added minutes, Portugal hunged on for the win.
