Cristiano Ronaldo made history by becoming the first player to score at five different Fifa World Cups as Portugal kicked off their campaign with an exciting 3-2 win against Ghana.

Ronaldo was participating in a game for the first time since his contentious television interview with Pierce Morgan, the previous week and his subsequent departure from Manchester United as a consequence of his statements.

And the 37-year-old scored the first goal from the penalty spot, smashing in after being tripped up in the area by Ghana's Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu.

Captain Ronaldo had a few early opportunities, but Lawrence Ati-Zigi saved a low effort and his header went wide of the far post.

The striker had a goal disallowed for pushing Alexander Djiku in the first half, while Ghana failed to record a single chance on target.

Andre Ayew scored an equaliser for Ghana in the second half benefiting from a Mohammed Kudus cross.

Joao Felix scored with a brilliantly clipped finish, and replacement Rafael Leao stroked in a goal calmly only seconds after coming on.

With time running down, Ghana got a goal back thanks to a header from Osman Bukhari, and things could have gotten dramatic in the dying embers of the game.

Goalkeeper Diogo Costa placed the ball on the ground in preparation to kick it upfield, presumably oblivious that Inaki Williams was behind him. However, the Ghana striker stumbled at that crucial moment, and a scuffed effort was cleared off the line as a result of William's quick reaction.

After a goalless draw between Uruguay and South Korea earlier on Thursday, Portugal tops Group H with their victory.
