The end-user electricity and water tariff have both been
increased by 27.15% and 21.55%, respectively, by the Public Utilities
Regulatory Commission (PURC).
The new tariffs are anticipated to go into force on September
1, 2022, according to the Commission.
In a 55-page document made public on May 10, 2022, the Ghana
Water Company Limited (GWCL) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG)
suggested raising prices for the following year.
The PURC should let the power distributor to levy a tariff
increase of 148% for 2022, according to the ECG's proposal. Additionally, it
requests 7.6 percent average changes between the years 2023 and 2026.
The Ghana Water Company's management also put out a proposal
for a 334 percent increase in pricing. It claims that the average rate per
cubic metre fell from 1.27 USD in 2019 to 1.13 USD as a consequence of the
devaluation of the cedi.
The PURC provided notice that despite their effort, the
Commission has yet to analyse the tariff suggestions and has not made a
judgement on any of the submissions via its Executive Secretary, Dr. Ishmeal
Ackah.
“In line
with the Commissions process, the
utility companies have been given the platform to engage stakeholders on their tariff
proposals,
including the Ministry of Finance, Ministry
of Water Resources and Sanitation, Parliamentary Select Committee on Water,
Works and Housing and the Development partners”, a statement from the Commission said.
