Former President John Dramani Mahama, on Tuesday, 16th August,
2022, paid a visit to the Appiatse community to interact with chiefs, people and
the Appiatse Disaster Relief committee. He made this known on his Facebook wall,
seen by GHANA News ONLINE.
“I visited the Appiatse community in the Western Region on
Tuesday to interact with the chiefs, the Appiatse Disaster Relief Committee,
and the people of the community.”
The Appiatse Community witnessed an explosion in February,
this year claiming 17 lives and leaving 59 injured in the process. An accident
involving a truck carrying explosives for a mining company (Maxam Ghana Ltd), a motorcycle and a third
vehicle close to an electricity transformer caused the explosion.
According to Mr. Mahama, he had handed over some quantity of
food and non-food items to the MP for Prestea Huni Valley, the MCE and the Appiatse
Disaster Relief Committee to be given to the community folks. He also gave
money to aid the further treatment of the injured victims.
“In response to complaints about the reduction in voluntary
relief support to the people, I handed over a quantity of food and non-food
items to the Member of Parliament for Prestea Huni Valley, the Municipal Chief
Executive, and the Appiatse Disaster Relief Committee to be made available to
the people.
“I also presented them with an amount of money to support the
further treatment of some of the injured victims.”
Mr. Mahama finally urged the Akufo-Addo led government to act
swiftly in supporting the people, in restoring their lives back to normalcy.
“In my remarks, I reiterated the concern of the affected
community about compensation and urged government to act proactively to ensure
that the people are supported to bring their lives back on track.
“The people have appreciated the response and support from
government after the disaster but their continued livelihoods are also
important.”
