Mo Salah watches play during a Premier League match. |
Mohamed Salah, Liverpool forward, is
likely to leave Anfield next summer on a free transfer.
The Egyptian international is set to begin the
last 12 months of his Liverpool contract, but neither the club nor the player
have made it apparent that a new contract is imminent.
Salah moved to the Reds from Roma in a transaction
estimated to be worth £43 million in June 2017. Over the course of his five
seasons with the Premier League side, Salah has scored 156 goals in 254 games.
During his tenure at Liverpool, the 30-year-old
has won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super
Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup.
Sadio Mane left for Bayern Munich earlier this
summer, and Jurgen Klopp replaced him with Darwin Nunez of Benfica. Salah,
though, voted against leaving ahead of the Champions League final against
Real Madrid last month.
Before their 1-0 loss in Paris, Salah told
reporters: “I don’t focus on my contract at the moment, I don’t want to be selfish
at all.
“This is about the team now; this is a really
important week for us, and I’m just focused on the team.
“I want to win the Champions League again; I want
to see Hendo [Jordan Henderson] have it again in his hands and give it to me
after. I don’t want to talk about the contract, we have a long time – I am stay
next season, for sure.”
Salah may leave the Reds in the summer, and there
have been rumours regarding where he would go. According to one source,
Barcelona has "promised a move to the Catalan giants next summer on a free
transfer."
Salah would want a Premier League move, according
to a different report from The Athletic's James Pearce earlier this month, if
he and Liverpool couldn't come to fresh terms before the summer transfer
window.
And now, according to the Daily Mirror, Salah's
tenure at Anfield is "entering its last chapter" since the Liverpool
board finds it "unlikely" to meet his demands.
Salah and Liverpool management have
"laboriously tried to reach a deal," but they remain "unwilling
to breach the salary structure" for the Egyptian.
Salah's departure during the current transfer
window is seen to be "extremely improbable," but the Reds "have
slapped a £60 million price tag" on his head if he does.
