Franklin Cudjoe,
President of IMANI Africa, has lambasted President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo
and his cabinet for prioritising the building of the National Cathedral above
other important national needs.
According to him,
the state's sponsorship of the project in the middle of the present economic
slump is "murderous."
Franklin Cudjoe,
while pushing the government to restore the economy, advocated for the
elimination of fuel taxes to save lives as the price of the commodity surged.
“Fuel prices have
gone up again. Slashing taxes on fuel is the sensible thing to do to save
lives. It is murderous to spend such taxes on a Cathedral amidst economic
paralysis. Even God and Satan know the economy is stupid. Fix it," he
tweeted.
The National
Cathedral project has sparked public outrage in recent weeks as it was revealed
that the government donated seed money for it, despite the government's
previous statement that, the project's funding would come from the
Christian community.
Samuel Okudzeto
Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North. The government has spent approximately
GHC200 million on the project so far, according to the report.
In
between discussions about the Cathedral, fuel costs have also risen,
with some Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) charging GHC13 for a litre of
diesel.
The GPRTU has
also threatened to raise transportation rates, claiming that it is bearing the
burden of rising fuel costs.
