In order to enable Cristiano Ronaldo to leave Old Trafford this summer, Manchester United apparently wants to recuperate the money they spent on bringing him to Old Trafford.

Ronaldo made a shocking announcement on Saturday, revealing that he intends to quit Manchester United in order to participate in the Champions League.

Despite scoring 24 goals in all competitions for Manchester United last season, the 37-year-old claims that the club cannot match his desire.

In spite of the player's declarations, reports indicate that United does not intend to allow Ronaldo to leave the club, even if they get a "good offer."

However, according to The Times, if a bidder can come up with at least the £12.9 million United paid Juventus for his services in August, they would be open to listen to proposals. United beat Manchester City to signing him.

The total cost of the transaction, which included incentives and add-ons, was believed to be £17 million.

Todd Boehly recently met with Ronaldo's agent, Jorge Mendes, and Chelsea are now considered the frontrunners to sign the Real Madrid star.

Ronaldo might end up at Bayern Munich since United are unwilling to transfer their best asset to a Premier League competitor, thus Robert Lewandowski, who is anxious to join Barcelona this summer, is expected to go for the Catalans.

Napoli have been mentioned as a possible destination for a return to Serie A, and a handful of ex-Italy internationals reported on Friday that he was headed to Roma to join Jose Mourinho, although it seems doubtful given that they will not be competing in the Champions League next season.

Former Roma defender Fabio Petruzzi said: “I know for a fact, from a highly accredited person, that Roma is trying get Cristiano Ronaldo by all means. Details will have to be ironed out, for image rights, but I know he will leave United.”

And former Juventus and Italy midfielder Angelo Di Livio has been told that July 7 “could be the date of the announcement” after speaking to “several sources”.

Di Livio said: “I know from several sources that Roma is trying to sign Cristiano Ronaldo and July 7 could be the date of the announcement. By chance I spoke with a friend who works on television and he found out about the negotiations for Cristiano from an important club manager at a dinner a few days ago.”
