The organisers of the Arise Ghana
demonstration will be arrested for their part in the events of Tuesday,
June 28, 2022, according to the Ghana Police Service.
After the demonstration at the Kwame Nkrumah
interchange descended into chaos, the police said that the leaders would be
held accountable for any violence and damage to public property.
The police said that they would later prosecute
the Arise Ghana demo organisers in court. The police claim that their
choice is in line with Section 3 of the Public Order Act (Act 491), which
imposes responsibility on protest organisers and other participants.
Under the direction of Chief Superintendent Grace
Ansah-Akrofi, the Ghana Police's Public Affairs Directorate released a
statement in which it said that it will later prosecute the Arise Ghana
demo organisers in court.
“The organisers of the demonstration will be arrested
and put before court for the attacks and damage to public property, in line
with the provisions of Section 3 of the the Public Order Act, (Act 491)."
part of the statement read.
Arise Ghana demonstrators poured out onto the
street on the first day of their intended two-day protest against rising
economic hardship.
Chaos ensued, and when police opened fire
with tear gas as demonstrators began hurling stones at the officers. According
to several news reports, the commotion started because demonstrators were
confused which route to take.
The demonstrators were trying to take the Ring
Road stretch to Ako Adjei and go on to the Jubilee House, despite the police's
insistence that they cannot use that route.
29 persons have been detained, in connection with
the violent occurrences that marred the June 28, 2022 Arise Ghana demonstration,
according to the Police.
The Police were also looking into the tape that
was available with the goal of making further arrests if necessary, according
to a statement dated June 28 and signed by Chief Superintendent Grace
Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs.
“The Police have arrested 29 demonstrators for
their participation in violent attacks on the Police and some members of the
public including school children during the Arise Ghana demonstration in Accra.
“Available footages of the event are being
reviewed and all other persons identified for taking part in the attacks as
well as inciting violence will be arrested and brought to face justice.”, the
