Members of the Civil and Local Government Staff
Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) are returning to work today, Monday, May 16,
2022 after calling off a three-week strike last Friday.
Work at numerous Ministries, Departments, and
Agencies came to a standstill as a result of the strike, which began on April
21, 2022.
CLOGSAG members demanded that the government
provide them a 20% political neutrality allowance.
CLOGSAG's Executive Secretary, Isaac Bampoe, has
said that if the government fails to fulfil its part of the agreement, they may
continue their strike.
“We expect all our members to go to work. We must
get it very clear. This is a game and we are on halftime. They are going to
their drawing board to strategize and we are also doing the same. We won’t give
our game plan out. People can make all the noise but we the technical people
will keep to our game plan,” he said.
The strike by CLOGSAG
was sparked by their demand for the payment of neutrality allowance.
The desire for the neutrality allowance has
sparked a public discussion, with differing views on its use.
While some argue that giving in to this demand
would open the floodgates for additional state allowance claims, others think
that such an allowance is necessary to discourage civil and municipal
government employees from serving for political reasons.
