President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has departed Accra for the Serbian capital of Belgrade, where he will head Ghana's team to the Non-Aligned Movement's 60th anniversary celebration (NAM).

The Non-Aligned Movement is an organization of 120 developing countries that are not officially affiliated with any major power bloc. It is the world's second-largest collection of nations after the United Nations.

Ghana's first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, was one of the Movement's five historic founding fathers. Jawaharlal Nehru of India, Ahmed Sukarno of Indonesia, Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt, and Josip Broz Tito of former Yugoslavia founded the Movement in Belgrade in 1961.

As a result, the Government of Serbia will hold a commemoration event in Belgrade on Monday, October 11 and 12 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the inaugural NAM Conference.

According to the Presidency, President Akufo-Addo will make a statement during the Conference reiterating Ghana's adherence to the Movement's ideals.

He will also have bilateral discussions with his Serbian counterpart, Aleksandar Vui, in order to enhance bilateral cooperation.

On the margins of the Conference, he is also scheduled to meet with Algeria's Prime Minister and Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister to address issues of mutual concern.

President Akufo-Addo was accompanied by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, the daughter of Ghana's first President, Samia Nkrumah, who is also a former Member of Parliament for Jomoro and former Chairperson of her father's party, the Convention People's Party (CPP), and officials from the Presidency and Foreign Ministry. They'll be back on Tuesday, October 12.

"In his absence, the Vice President, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, shall operate in his place in line with Article 60(8) of the Constitution."
