Chelsea reclaimed top spot in the Premier League with a 1-0
win against Brentford, thanks to a goal from Ben Chilwell and some great defending
to stave off late pressure.
After Liverpool took the lead by beating Watford earlier in
the day, Thomas Tuchel's team reacted with a mature and tenacious performance
against their promoted opponents in the late game.
Left-back for England Chilwell scored his third goal in three
games for club and country in the last minute of the first half.
In the first league encounter between the two teams in 74
years, the European champions controlled the first half but had to dig deep to
earn the three points.
If Brentford striker Bryan Mbeumo had scored instead of
hitting the Blues woodwork twice each side of Chilwell's goal, the result would
have been different.
Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy had to make two crucial and
courageous stops in a frenetic closing 15 minutes in which Brentford put
everything at their opponents, while Blues league debutant Malang Sarr cleared
the ball off the line.
Mendy also saved an acrobatic attempt from Bees midfielder
Christian Norgaard in injury time, securing a win that the Blues goalkeeper
celebrated enthusiastically with his teammates at the final whistle, while the
relieved away supporters shouted their joy.
