The Black Stars of Ghana defeated their Zimbabwean
counterparts, 3-1 in the third Group G encounter in the African qualifications
for the 2022 World Cup in Quatar.
Goals by Mohammed Kudus, Thomas Partey, and Andre Ayew
gave the Black Stars three points, keeping them in second place with six
points, one point behind leaders South Africa, who defeated Ethiopia 3-1 in the
other group match.
Ghana got off to a flying start in Cape Coast, thanks to a spectacular
goal from Kudus Mohammed in the fifth minute.
The Black Stars were extremely good in the first
minutes, pressing the Zimbabweans in quest of a cushion goal.
Kudus Mohammed came close to scoring his second goal of
the game, but his attempt was weak and was comfortably collected by Zimbabwean
goalkeeper Washington Arubi.
Ghana was clearly on top in the first half and looked
the more dangerous in attack, with the Warriors often forced to try their luck
from long range. As the first half came to a close, Ghana held on to their lone
goal.
The Warriors began the second half with greater
purpose, and in the 47th minute, they were given a penalty, which Captain
Knowledge Musona converted from 12 yards out to restore parity. The visitors
came close to taking the lead in the 57th minute, but Jordan Zemura's attempt
hit the post.
Substitute Benjamin Tetteh had a great chance to put
Ghana ahead after an hour, but he scuffed his attempt wide.The game was open,
with both teams trying to grab the lead, and Ghana Captain Dede Ayew came
close, but his attempt clipped the foot of the post.
In the 66th minute, Thomas Partey flashed past two
players and blasted the ball past goalkeeper Washington Arubi to give Ghana the
lead.
The Warriors staged a number of offensive forays in the
last quarter of the game, but Ghana goalkeeper Jojo Wollacott made equally
excellent saves to hold the visitors at bay.
Dede Ayew eventually found the back of the net with a
powerful header past Zimbabwean goalkeeper Arubi.
In the end, the Black Stars were able to hold on for
all three points.
